Shallee McArthur has a passion for weaving stories of all kinds to remember what we mustn’t forget: how to be human. She has been saturated in books and tales since childhood, and has created them herself since she could hold a pen. Initially, she stole all her ideas from the Story Club in Anne of Green Gables, but she eventually gravitated toward writing original work. Having earned a bachelor’s degree in English literature in 2007, she has worked as both a published author and a teacher of creative writing and storytelling since 2013. She has taught the art of building stories at Storymakers Writing Conference; Life, the Universe, and Everything writing conference; Salt Lake Comic Con; various schools and classrooms; and was a creative writing instructor for Utah Tech University’s Community Education Department for several years. In her day job as an associate clinical mental health counselor, Shallee’s focus on story continues, helping clients heal through understanding their own stories, sharing them in a compassionate space, and building the new stories they want to tell of their lives.
Through the years, she has revisited the value of re-telling tales like those in Anne of Green Gables’ Story Club, and her passion for story grew to include the joy of oral storytelling and folk song performance. She believes that the remembering and sharing of stories is how we grow, heal, and build understanding and connection as a collective human race, with the planet as a whole, and with ourselves. She subscribes to the belief that, as Sue Monk Kidd said, “Stories have to be told or they die, and when they die, we can’t remember who we are or why we’re here.” She strives to tell tales and sing songs that incorporate engaging, captivating stories told in an expressive and responsive style that resonate as both deeply personal and profoundly universal.
Whether you’re looking for fun and meaningful entertainment, an event that builds excitement and passion for family or heritage lore, an exploration of narrative and creativity to support mental health, education on creating and constructing stories, or tailored programing to support the purposes of your organization, society, festival, or school, Shallee would love to bring your story vision to life!
